The Concord Giants continued their winning ways by defeating their namesake
from Clayton. Clayton scored 2 runs in the first inning and 2 more in the second
to lead 4-0. Concord was shut down by good defense through 3 innings. They
connected at the plate hitting the ball very hard, but Clayton seemed to be in the right place
consistently to make the plays.
Momentum change came in the 3rd when Concord 3rd baseman Craig Doiron
speared a line drive off the 1st batter. The next batter saw 3 consecutive
strikes.
The 3rd batter walked, but was mowed down by catcher Kris Garcia as he tried to
steal.
The 4th inning saw a new Clayton pitcher and change of fortune for Concord as
they were able to score 2 runs. Luis Corral hit for a double and was driven home
by
Andrew Gardner. Andrew was driven in by Jerrod McHenry’s single, which he then
stretched into a triple.
The 5th Inning proved decisive as Concord scored 6 runs sending 10 batters
to the plate. Andrew
Garner and Josh Keane both doubled. Craig Doiron, Seth Chatterly, Luis Corral and
Paloma Woods hit singles and scored. Kris Garcia walked and scored a run.
Concord pitcher Luis Corral was in a groove as he allowed only two base runners
after the 2nd inning, both walks. He made superlative defensive plays: spearing
a
line drive, catching pop-ups, and fielding grounders to throw out runners at
first. He had 4 strikeouts, twice with the batter caught ‘looking’. He also
stole two
bases and scored two runs. He pitched a complete game.
Ultimately, the Concord Giants prevailed over the Clayton team with a combination of good
pitching, base running and consistent hitting. No secret there.
