Concord American Little League - 2003

Opening Day Activities
March 29, 2003

This year's Board of Directors worked very hard to provide us with a great day of activities.  The turn-out was wonderful and the day of activities was filled with lots of fun for the kids and their families.  For those of us who have been to lots of Opening Days, it was great to see the kids and families after the long winter.  To those who were new and coming to their first Opening Day, we hope you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you at the games.  Our first games begin on Monday, March 31st.  Please check the website for schedules and scores on a daily basis.  I will post the scores as soon as I get them from the managers.

Congratulations to Concord American Little League President Mark Lloyd who is serving in his first term this year as president and who worked very hard to make opening day a success.   Special thanks and recognition goes out to Kathy Sheehan who is our Auxiliary Director and was largely responsible for putting together the excellent team of volunteers who also worked hard to make the day successful.

Kathy writes the following:

Opening Day was AWESOME!  I am so excited at the turnout on Saturday and everyone seems to have really enjoyed themselves.  The weather was great, the food was delicious and the games were kicking into high gear.

This year we had our first Home Run Derby.  This replaced the Hit-A-Thon fundraiser that we have always done and I believe the kids had a great time.  We sure have some heavy hitters out there!  I would like to thank everyone that participated and I would like to congratulate the following winners of the finalist round:

5,6,7 year old division
BRANDON OSWALD , A A’s

8,9,10,11 year old division
MICHAEL COLLODEL, Major Mets

11,12,13,14 year old division
CONOR HARRINGTON, Major Cardinals

Each winner received a trophy and a gift certificate to Toys R’ Us.

I want to thank everyone for all of their hard work.  It takes all of us to make opening day a success for the kids and thank you to you parents who volunteered a window of your time on Saturday to oversee a game, serve food, run errands, or clean-up.  You are truly appreciated.

I also want to thank my committee.  Opening Day is a huge event to organize and without my committee it would be impossible.  There is hours upon hours put into this starting in September.   I want to thank TIM HOVLAND for all his dedication and hard work.  Tim makes sure we have all of our tables and chairs, BBQ’s, generators, etc. and he is out at the fields all day Friday making sure the fields are ready, setting up games and dunk tanks and so much more.  Thank you to MARK LLOYD & CHUCK DAVIDSON for their help with the Home Run Derby.  This was such a success this year and I know next year will be even better.  Thank you also to Mark for his patience with my thousands of phone calls and panic attacks.   Thank you to MARY BISHOP for singing our national anthem and for spending all day at the photo table to make sure all of our teams were organized and that the pictures stayed on schedule.  Thanks you to LISA SMITH-JOHNSTON for managing our carnival.  Lisa takes this on every year.  She organizes the games and prizes, she lines up the volunteers and provides hours of fun for our kids.   Thank you to our BBQ CREW – CHRIS SHEEHAN, DENNY SHEEHAN, TIM SHEEHAN, CHRIS OSWALD, DANETTE RUEGER,  PAUL OSWALD, DAVE WEISBROD and TERESA BANGERT.  What a great group – the food was terrific, hot and cooking all day.  PHIL CHAPMAN – PARTY CENTRAL, what can I say about the coolest D.J. I know.  Thanks again for volunteering your time and talent to make our opening day a success!  KIM GALINDO and the MAJOR MARINERS-Making magic happen in the snack shack.  Thanks so much for stepping up so late in the game.

There are so many other people that have helped and I am sorry I cannot mention everyone by name.  You all make my job as Auxiliary Director that much easier – without your help I would not be pulling out my hair, I would have no hair.  I look forward to seeing you all out on the fields this season!

For Our Kids!

Auxiliary Director

Remember, Little League exists because of the people who volunteer.  These volunteers have been working behind the scenes since the end of last season to get ready for this one.  If your are interested in volunteering time to the league, ask your team manager or team mom how you can get involved.  Your participation as a volunteer is greatly appreciated by the league and is the only way that things get done.

If you have any photos to share, please email them to me at rockaway@astound.net and I will get them on the website as soon as possible.  I saw lots of digital camers at opening day this year so I expect a lot of great photos to share with all of you. On behalf of Concord American, I wish you all a wonderful and safe baseball season and I look forward to see you at the games.

Sincerely,
