The first game of the 2002 season was a lot closer than the score indicates. In a nail-biter that went right down to the wire, the Mariners held on to beat the Angels by a score of 5 to 1. The Mariner’s bats were alive early in this contest with some solid hitting in key situations.
But the Angels hung tough and with a score of 5 to 1 going into the bottom of the 5th inning, they put a rally together scoring 3 runs to make the score 5 to 4. The Angels had the bases loaded with one out when the umpire stopped the game because of darkness. The league rule reads that when a game is called because of darkness and a team has not finished their at bat, the score reverts back to the prior inning, thus the final score of 5 to 1.
This
was a tough defeat for the Angels who had a chance to win the game but
time and daylight ran out. The Angel's next game will be played on
Saturday against the Giants at 9:00 am. See you all there!
